The End of - (Six Sigma) Before You Follow-Up the Advice
In A recent BusinessWeek issue if found the title: “the end of the Six Sigma culture?” In short, the article related the former success stories of six sigma with a current demand for creativity which didn’t result in a support for Six Sigma.
When reading such a title you might think, "ok, if no longer Six Sigma, what then?" What will follow? But you could also think; "does this (negative six sigma advice) affect us at all?"
In many cases it will not affect your business. Six sigma is first of all for larger companies and second focused on streamlining the business process. It is most of all about efficiency. The method is used in areas of production, distribution but rarely in sales and direct marketing.
But besides the question whether you should focus more on six sigma or some other method you should know the relation between culture and productivity.
... Culture is never leading.
One of the definitions of culture is that it: “Is THE way in which a large group of people (all) solve certain problems that occur in that group.” It is how people act on average and on specific challenges unique to that group.
The key for the six sigma discussion is that the type of business your company is in, defines much of the kind of problems to solve.
... The business is leading.
So when you wonder whether six sigma or any other cultural model should suit your company first realize WHAT you business is, or how it is going to be changed.
